KLINGER semi-metallic gasket, spiral wound gasket

Metal–soft material gaskets

Metal–soft material gaskets (spiral wound, kammprofile and corrugated gaskets) are mainly used in high-temperature and high-pressure industrial applications and for sealing equipment with cyclic operation (heating up, cooling down and reheating).

Spiral wound gaskets

KLINGER spiral wound gaskets combine the simple sealing capability of graphite, PTFE or mica filler with the strength of a specially profiled, spring-like metal spiral. The sealing element is produced by winding the metal spiral and the filler together, creating a robust gasket that is easy to install. KLINGER spiral wound gaskets can be manufactured from a wide range of metals to resist chemical attack and temperature-related degradation, and can be combined with graphite, PTFE or mica filler.

Main advantages of spiral wound gaskets:

  • highly tight, reliable sealing;
  • suitable for high temperatures and pressures;
  • can be manufactured for standard flanges as well as custom-designed equipment

Kammprofile gaskets

KLINGER kammprofile gaskets are metal–soft material gaskets consisting of a serrated metal core and a soft sealing layer. The metal core has concentric serrations on both sides, which makes it suitable for high-pressure applications and ensures that the soft sealing material flows into the flange surface irregularities, even at relatively low bolt loads. The result is a gasket that combines the advantages of soft cut gaskets with those of metallic gaskets.

Expanded graphite is the most common facing material used for kammprofile gaskets, although other materials can also be used, such as PTFE in aggressive chemical environments or mica-based facings for high-temperature applications.

Kammprofile gaskets are mainly used where the gasket width is often limited, and they are frequently used to upgrade applications currently using metal-jacketed gaskets, thanks to better tightness, easy installation and the possibility of reuse.

Main advantages of kammprofile gaskets:

  • minimal surface pressure (15 N/mm²) is required during installation to achieve tightness
  • wide range of chemical resistance
  • particularly suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature applications
  • can be refurbished and reused to a limited extent

Corrugated gaskets

A corrugated metal ring with a soft sealing layer bonded to both sides, which can be made from various metals and asbestos-free materials.

Construction:

  • A metal ring corrugated to a thickness of 1.3 mm, with a soft sealing layer bonded to both sides.
    Metal sheet thickness: 0.5 mm.
  • Metal carrier materials: 1.4541; 1.4571 (standard material grades), 1.4828; 2.4066; 2.4360
  • Sealing layer materials: PTFE, graphite, mica
  • Shapes manufactured: round rings, oval, rectangular with holes, with webs

Application range:

  • Pressure: up to PN 400, depending on size.
  • Temperature: up to 800 °C, depending on the materials selected.
  • General use: manufacture and installation of apparatus, equipment and pipelines.
  • Excellent tightness with PTFE and graphite sealing layers (TA Luft).
  • Chemical resistance depends on the materials selected.
