Round glass is used for sight glasses and sight glass fittings. The material can be soda-lime or borosilicate.
Tongue-shaped glasses are mainly used in level gauges. The material is borosilicate glass, in transparent or reflex (prismatic) design.
The function of mica is to protect the glass, since hot water dissolves glass as the temperature rises, as does the alkaline pH typical of boiler water. Together, these mean that the glass must be protected above 32 bar, and mica is the means of doing so.
When replacing glass, it is always recommended to replace the old glass gasket and cushion gasket as well, as this ensures the expected operational safety and reliability.
Glasses are always supplied with a glass gasket and cushion gasket!
